CHEMA- Community Habitat Environmental Management Programme is an environmental non-profit organization established under the Diocese of Kayanga and operating in Karagwe and Kyerwa districts. The main focus of CHEMA is on natural resources management and sustainable agriculture. CHEMA empowers communities to manage their own natural resources and increase productivity by promoting activities in natural resource management addressing all three pillars of sustainability - social, economic and environmental.

Short Description

Over 80% of the population living in the planned project area are predominantly peasant farmers with general low agricultural production, limited alternative sources of income other than sale of food. They suffer from food insecurity, poor housing conditions, very poor sanitation and hygiene standard, high prevalence of preventable diseases, limited access to medical treatment, and high rate of family conflicts due to imbalanced gender relationships.

The project is targeting the poor households who depend entirely on agriculture as a source of their livelihood. The project is designed to reach 450 households. 480 women and 420 men are expected to be direct beneficiaries. 10 Primary schools environmental clubs will be established with about 900 pupils and 20 teachers reached.

The project is designed to improve basic and environmental living conditions of small holder farmers in the selected project area alongside improvement of natural resources management and sustainable agriculture. It is expected that at the end of the project intervention, households have increased and diversified their resources of fruit- timber- and fodder trees and have reduced the consumption of fire wood and other sources of fuel through the use of energy saving stoves. The protection of the forest is increased through the recognition of its importance as catchment area for water sources and for the value for beekeeping as an additional income. Water sources are rehabilitated and better protected and contribute to a better livelihood through more hygiene in daily life and less water borne diseases. Target communities have increased income and improved food security through higher soil fertility, improved seeds, better pre- and post-harvest pest and disease control, better banana management and established kitchen gardens.

Project Objectives

The overall objective is to ensure fair access and sharing of natural resources to contribute to the improvement of livelihood in rural communities. Specifically, the projects aims to ensure that basic and environmental living conditions of small holder farmers in the selected project area are improved through village based Natural Resources Management and Sustainable Agriculture.

Expected Results

  • Target groups, beneficiaries and community are involved from the start through Participatory Learning and Action (PLA)
  • Increased income and improved food security are achieved in the target communities through sustainable agriculture
  • Natural resources are more protected and better managed
  • Health situation at homesteads is improved and family conflicts are reduced
