New in the Team: Patricia Nyasuna (Gender Focal Person East Africa)

Patricia Nyasuna is our (this year newly established) Gender Focal Person in the Regional Office in East Africa. Patricia joins us from Women of Uganda network (WOUGNET) where she has been working as Program Officer- Gender & ICT. She has over 7 years’ experience in gender equality and empowerment of women and has acquired specialized training in Gender Data, Women’s Right to Information (WRI), Online Safety, Capacity building for CSOs, Women in Business Management and Internal Governance. She is a @TechChange alumni, Uganda School of Internet Governance Mentee and Women in Business Mentee alumni @CherieBlairFndn. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with specialization in gender studies. Patricia will be responsible for the support of mainstreaming gender among the East Africa partner organizations including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan as well the ROEA all its programs.


Did you know about HORIZONT3000 before?

Patricia: Yes, the organization with which I previously worked had once got an invitation to participate in a meeting organized by HORIZONT3000 in Kampala. I remember following up the invitation and understanding what HORIZONT3000 does before sharing with my supervisor who attended the meeting. Aside from that, I had seen the logo on the reports of one of our member organizations then.

What challenges do you see in your new job?

Patricia: Well given that this is a new position even for the organization, I am not picking up from any previous learnings meaning that the role comes with a number of unexpected situations and challenges me to be extremely innovative in ensuring that I am fully able to deliver on my tasks. Also given that HORIZONT3000 partners with a number of catholic based organizations that are mainly male dominated I anticipate some challenges in communicating gender equality however I am very excited to share but also learn and see how it goes. 🙂

What goals have you set for yourself?

Patricia: I hope that I am able to support but also learn a number of things in my role as Gender Focal Person and KNOWHOW3000 Coordinator East Africa. But specifically I hope that with support from the team, gender and rights are integrated and enforced in HORIZONT3000 projects, processes, programs and culture. I also want to build relationships with colleagues and partner organisations to know their style of work, level of gender awareness (hopes and fears) so as to develop synergies for learning and capacity building. I also hope to support in documentation to ensure partner organizations and HORIZONT3000 team have access to relevant information on gender and strategies for change.

What changes do you want to see in the future?

Patricia: I hope to see that as an organization we are able to be key enablers of women’s full participation in the development agenda at all levels right from our partner organisations but starting with our selves.
